Year One

Welcome to Year 1! We have two classes in Year 1 and we share an inside and outside learning area.

 Welcome to Hedgehog Class!

Teacher: Miss Walter

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Francis

We have PE on a Monday afternoon, but need to keep our named PE kit in school all week.  We visit the library once a week and have Golden Time every Friday afternoon.  We follow the National Curriculum throughout the year and, to help with transition from Foundation stage, in Term 1 we teach this through an Early Years Foundation Stage style.

Reading- We would like every child to read to an adult at home at least three times a week. The children select their own reading books within their ability range and should read these twice before changing them. They are allowed to revisit books they have previously chosen. Please note, we cannot change books unless the journal has been signed by an adult.

We enjoy having visitors to help with our reading and our learning.

We go out on trips and visits each term linked into our topics to support and extend our learning.

Home Learning will begin from Term 2. It will take the form of a single sheet of activities designed to be done in small parts through the week. Home Learning will come home on a Friday and should be back in school the following Friday.

There is some useful information in the front of your child’s reading journal. Please familiarise yourself with the Common Exception Words for Year 1 (page 5) and the Phase 3 and 5 sounds (page 6) The children will need to know how to read and write these confidently by the end of the year so any support you can give at home will really help!

Please make sure all children’s possessions are named especially water bottles, book bags, jumpers and cardigans!
